Governance
Run by our members,For our members
Our members become our leaders at HSU, resulting in leadership with a vested interest and hands-on experience with the same challenges that you face.
The HSU maintains the highest standards of governance through its National Council, National Executive and is regulated under the Fair Work (Registered Organisation) Act 2009 (Cwlth).Â
The HSU is an official registered organisation
This means the HSU has been formally registered by the Fair Work Commission under the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 to represent the interests of workers in the health and community services sectors. We are regulated by the Registered Organisations Commission (ROC).
The National Council is HSU’s supreme decision-making body. Only National Council has the power to alter the rules of the union.
HSU policies and procedures are continuously revised and implemented to ensure the highest standard of governance.
HSU Rules are updated regularly and made available for download on the Fair Work Commission website.
National Executive
The purpose of the HSU National Executive is to govern the union between National Council meetings. National Executive is comprised of National Officers and the Secretaries of each of the eight HSU branches. In the case where a Branch Secretary is also elected as a National Officer, the Assistant Branch Secretary carries the votes of their branch.

HSU Rules
The rules of the HSU set out the governance arrangements of the organisation and determine the members and industries which the union can represent. The current rules of the HSU are published on the website of the Fair Work Commission, along with a record of previous rule changes.
Our policies and procedures are maintained with the interests of our members front of mind. Current versions of our policies and procedures are available below.
The Registered Organisations’ Commission (ROC) requires the National Office Reporting Unit of the union to advise its members of the relevant remunerations paid to the five highest paid officers with national responsibilities in the union. The HSU rules extend these reporting obligations to all national officers of the union. Below is the information as advised to the ROC and the remaining information by branch of all national officers as required under the rules of the organisation.
In keeping with our values of transparency and accountability, copies of our end-of-year financial statements and other reports are available to view below.
