The Health Services Union has announced the retirement of its national secretary, Lloyd Williams, who will conclude almost four decades of successful service to health and care workers in July.

Williams joined the Union’s Victorian Health and Community Services Union (HACSU) branch in 1989 after working in mental health. He rose to the position of branch secretary in 1999.

During his time leading HACSU, Williams more than doubled the branch’s membership, from 4,500 members to over 10,500. He drove an unprecedented agreement to secure eight years of entitlements for disability workers, embedding core public sector industrial rights as they transitioned out of public employment.

Williams became national secretary in 2019, having previously served as national president. Over the past seven years under Williams’ leadership, the union has been a constant presence in national debates, driving a vibrant agenda around the needs of the NDIS workforce, reproductive leave and support for the NSW branch’s successful push to transform the wages and economics of aged care.

In the last two years, Williams successfully confronted challenges in the union’s Victoria Number 1 branch, driving crucial governance reforms to improve transparency and financial management.

“Lloyd Williams has made an indelible impact on our union, materially improving the lives of many hundreds of thousands of workers, especially in the disability sector,” said HSU National President, Gerard Hayes. “He has been decisive in confronting governance challenges, leaving us in a much stronger position to keep delivering for a membership that really needs that support.”

National Senior Assistant Secretary, Kate Marshall, said: “Lloyd’s sense of right and wrong has never wavered. It’s been a privilege and honour to work together on agenda setting campaigns such as the Union’s push for paid placements for allied health workers as well as reproductive leave. He has worked hard to maintain unity of the National Executive and his commitment to members has been extraordinary.”

Williams will finish in July. The Union will announce his successor between now and then.
