This week, following the announcement of National Secretary Lloyd Williams’ retirement in March, the HSU National Council formally accepted his resignation, effective 3 July 2026.
The National Council also accepted the resignation of Gerard Hayes AM as HSU National President. Gerard will continue in his role as Secretary of the HSU NSW/ACT/QLD Branch and will remain an important national voice as a member of the HSU National Executive.
The National Council extends its sincere thanks to both leaders for their extraordinary service to the union. Together, they represent more than sixty years of dedicated leadership and commitment to HSU members. Their contribution to the strength, unity and direction of the union cannot be overstated.
Lloyd was recognised for his tireless commitment, strategic leadership and steadfast advocacy for members. His collaborative approach with all branches, strong relationships across the union movement, and unwavering focus on advancing the interests of the HSU have made a lasting and positive contribution to the union’s strength and cohesion. The Council wishes Lloyd a long and happy retirement.
Gerard was thanked for his exceptional service, marked by unifying leadership and fearless advocacy for workers. His role in securing historic gains for aged care workers, along with his commitment to developing the next generation of union leaders, has strengthened the HSU and will have a lasting impact for years to come.
The National Council also endorsed the incoming HSU National leadership, effective 4 July 2026.
Dustin Halse has been appointed to the paid office of National Secretary.
Kate Marshall, currently Senior National Assistant Secretary, will now take on the paid role of National President, recognising the senior leadership, responsibility and representation she is already providing across the union.
The National Senior Assistant Secretary role will transition to an unpaid office, with Robert Moore appointed to this position.
To fill the vacancy created by this appointment, Lauren Hutchins has been appointed to the unpaid office of National Assistant Secretary.
