MEDIA RELEASE

HSU National today welcomed the bi-partisan passing of a motion supporting the establishment of a royal commission to inquire into violence, abuse and neglect of people with a disability.

Branches of HSU National proudly cover workers in the disability sector in a number of states.

“HSU National congratulates everyone who played role in achieving this historic milestone. Disability voices will no longer be silent,” said HSU National Secretary Lloyd Williams.

“However, it is critical that the Government gets the Royal Commission Terms of Reference right and consult genuinely with stakeholders, including participants, carers, families, experts, as well as workers and their representatives,” said Mr Williams.

“Workers in the disability sector are committed, passionate and skilled. Their experiences and knowledge will be critical to ensuring that this Royal Commission is meaningful and leads to real reform.”

“All workers in the disability sector want to create a fair, equitable and quality NDIS and disability sector.”

The 2015 Senate inquiry which found widespread rates of violence and abuse against people with a disability, and which strongly recommended holding a royal commission, was a wake-up call to Government and this overdue action should be celebrated by all sector stakeholders.
