The work of cleaners has been vital to controlling the outbreak of COVID-19 in Australia and has confirmed the critical role they play in protecting the health and safety of the community.
In aged care it has been revealed that many roles within the sector, including cleaners, have been excluded from receiving the Government’s aged care retention bonus.
More than 125,000 aged care workers, including cleaners, laundry and catering staff, will miss out on the Government’s aged care retention bonus to be paid in July.
Today, on International Cleaners Day, the Health Services Union (HSU) is calling on the Government to extend the payment to include all workers in aged care.
Quotes attributable to Tim Jacobson, Acting National Secretary, Health Services Union
“The HSU urges the Government to pay the retention bonus to all workers in aged care, including the hardworking cleaners.”
“It is unfair to exclude these workers from receiving the payment, given how important their work has been during the pandemic.”
“Cleaners and all workers in aged care should be recognised for their efforts in the fight against COVID-19.”
“The HSU thanks our hardworking cleaners on International Cleaners Day, we celebrate them today, and every day.”
