With nearly 15,000 members working in the disability sector the HSU has a keen interest in ensuring that both people with disabilities and workers are treated with dignity and respect. Our members work with vulnerable people on a daily basis and abhor all instances of violence, abuse and neglect against people with disabilities. The HSU welcomes the establishment of this important Senate Enquiry and supports strong protective and responsive safeguards to ensure that all people with disabilities live a life free from violence, abuse and neglect.
We emphasise that the overwhelming majority of disability support workers are people of high integrity who do an incredible job making a positive difference to the lives of people with disabilities with whom they work, even though they are poorly paid for the skills, knowledge and the emotional labour they bring to their work. Furthermore, we strongly believe that the workforce has a vital role to play in preventing and responding to incidents of violence, abuse and neglect against people with disabilities.Download
