National Executive Statement to Members03 April 2012HSU Response to FWA Investigation Conclusion
"The Health Services Union welcomes today's announcement by the General Manager of Fair Work Australia (FWA) that the investigation into the financial affairs of the National Office of the Health Services Union (HSU) has been finalised." "The announcement today that the FWA investigation into the financial affairs of the HSU for the period 2002 to 2007 has 'found a total of 181 contraventions of Schedule 1 to the Workplace Relations Act 1996 (the RAO Schedule) and the HSU Rules by the National Office reporting unit, three former or current officials and one individual who was not an official of the HSU', means that the Union is a step closer to getting to the bottom of alleged financial maladministration." "This investigation has taken a considerable time to complete and the advice today from the General Manager of Fair Work Australia that the entire investigation report has been referred to the Commonwealth DPP is welcomed as a further step towards establishing whether any conduct of a criminal nature has occurred and whether criminal prosecutions can be pursued." "We understand that FWA is now considering whether proceedings will be commenced in the Federal Court of Australia and we await the outcome of those considerations." "Members should be reassured that the National Executive of the HSU has spent a lot of time putting in place best practice financial governance policy and procedures which will ensure that these events will not be repeated in the HSU and we are confident that our Union is on a path to recovery that will see it as a strong advocate for workers in the health industry in Australia into the future." "Unions, including the HSU, have a long and proud tradition of standing up for working people and giving them a voice to be heard. This is what we are here for and this is what we will continue to do." MEDIA CONTACT Chris Brown, Acting HSU National President, 0418 564 199 |
