Safety Week - Don't Risk 2nd Rate Safety

19 October 2009

Safe Work Australia Week 2009 is from 25 to 31 October this year. Safe Work Australia Week aims to highlight work and safety issues in the workplace and encourage workers to get invoved in safety at work to help reduce injuries and deaths at work.

There is no better way to get involvd by finding out what harminisation of Australia's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)laws mean to you.

The idea of having a uniform set of OHS laws across Australia is a good one. The problem comes to the details. Unfortunately, OHS harminisation does not mean taking the best of all the states and territories laws and coming up with a single law.

The changes proposed could lead to a reduction of safety at your workplace. Safe Work Australia, the national reguatory body, tells us over 135 000 Australians are seriously injured at work every year and more than 260 die as a result of work-related injuries.

We can't risk 2nd rate safety.

UnionsNSW and the ACTU are holding a public meeting at Martin Place in Sydney's CBD on Wednesday 28 October at 12:30pm. Come along and find out more.

You can also check out the ACTU's website for more information and sign the electronic petition at www.dontriskoursafety.com.au.
