Mature Age Carers in the Workforce Project - Video Opportunity05 February 2008Are you an employer in Sydney with mature age workers aged 45 and over who have caring responsibilities in addition to their paid work? Are you a mature age worker in Sydney who combines caring responsibilities with work? If so, the Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) has an opportunity for you to assist in the development of a video that explores the employment challenges and opportunities for mature age carers and their employers. Australians are now living longer, having fewer children, and retiring earlier. An impending labour shortage may need to be met by retaining older workers to secure Australia's well-being and ensure business viability. An older workforce will be in demand and mature age workers, including those with caring responsibilities, may choose to remain longer in the work force. The Mature Age Carers in the Workforce Project is part of the NSW Carers Action Plan, a whole of government strategy outlining the NSW Government's commitment to carers over the next five years. The project's priority is that carers are supported to combine caring and work. A video is being made showing how employers and their mature age employees with caring responsibilities can make changes to working arrangements so that employees can combine caring and work, and so that employers can retain valuable workers. The video will focus on work performed in a number of occupations, including personal care assistants, domestic and clerical workers in aged care accommodation, child care workers, welfare workers, bank tellers, club workers, shop assistants and clerical workers. The OIR is also seeking industry partners from the NSW business community to enhance the capacity of NSW businesses to attract and retain mature age workers with caring responsibilities. If you are interested in participating in the video, please contact Cheryl Hyde, the OIR's Principal Analyst for this project, on (02) 9020 4570 or library@oir.commerce.nsw.gov.au |
