Health Sector Job Vacancies Rise - ABS Reports

09 January 2008

The ABS reported today that the Health and Community Services’ Sector Job Vacancies rose by an additional 1,200 in the three months to November 2007. This increases the number of unfilled vacancies in the health and community services sector to 15,300 across Australia. The additional vacancies translate to approximately 1,092,000 fewer episodes of service or treatment for patients in the three months to November.

This brings the total number of services not delivered due to vacancies to 153,000 per day.**

These statistics support the persistent claims by the HSU, that all governments need to address the factors leading to chronic shortages, including improving the income, safety, working terms and conditions and professional requirements of health workers.

Governments also need reminding that there can be no growth in labourforce participation and the economy if the population is unwell.

The health sector vacancies are equivalent to the total number of vacancies in the Mining, Construction and Communications industries combined.
