Australia's Foreign Aid gets some attention

02 November 2007

World Vision CEO and Make Poverty History campaigner, Tim Costello, welcomed Labor's promise to increase Australia's contribution to world aid.

Mr Costello also called on John Howard to match kevin Rudd's committment to raise Australia's spending form 30 cents in every $100 to 50 cents in every $100 in federal government revenue.

Mr Costello said labor's move will bring Australia's international aid spending to 0.5 per cent of the gross national income and would also bring Australia's contribution into line with many European countries.

Labor front bencher Bob McMullian said of Mr Costello, "He's done a lot of hard work around Australia and around the world for the poorest people in the world, and he's been a great advocate for them."

"Kevin Rudd's made a historic commitment to lift our aid performance to match world's best practice and I hope the Government can match that commitment and respond to Tim Costello's call" said Mr McMullian.

News.com.au (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22690383-5007133,00.html) has reported that the Prime Minister has refused to match Labor's committement.
