Queensland Branch Secretary gives his view on John Howard's reconciliation

23 October 2007

John Howard is up for re-election and he wants our vote. Is the PM genuine about reconciliation or is it just an election gimmick?

Reconciliation is on his agenda and I think it's a little too late especially when he made that promise back in 1997.

Have you wondered what his government has done for the Indigenous Australians? Under his government, self determination went out the window. Under his government, education and health have become major problems.

Where is the balance of rights and responsibility and where is the progress?

There are more Indigenous children leaving school early and more Indigenous elders having health issues, the justice just isn't there.

He admits he struggled the entire time as Prime Minister with the idea of "Reconciliation" but I ask you, "how hard is it to say Sorry?" Surely it can't be that hard, it can't be that much of a struggle. I find it hard to believe that the Prime Minister struggles with Reconciliation. I think he just doesn't believe in it. I mean after all, this is the man who has sent our soldiers off to fight an illegal war in Iraq. He didn't struggle with that.

Come on Mr Howard, you have got to be kidding about struggling with improving conditions for the traditional land owners of this great country. If you cared so much about a united and unified Australia, more money should be spent on developing Indigenous Health, Education, Community Development Programs, making sure that there is structure in place instead of spending the money in a war that we shouldn't have never been involved in the first place.

John Howard does not recognise or nor respect the past, as a leader he would have apologised for the injustices that happened to our Indigenous peoples. A real leader would acknowledge and apologise for the injustices of the past so that a true reconciliation could be made.

Should we put our faith in John Howard's Reconciliation? I think not.
