Tax cuts or better services?16 October 2007Yesterday John Howard and Peter Costello announced huge $34 billion tax cuts gambling on workers having short memories. HSU National President, Michael Williamson, said “At a time when workers’ rights and entitlements are under attack from the government, a tax cut is not going to solve the problem.’ "The $20 a week tax cut for average workers promised by the Liberals yesterday is nowhere near enough to cover the loss in pay from John Howard's unfair industrial relations laws & the increases in housing, petrol, and other living costs for working families." HSU President, Michael Williamson, said: "Government paid for research shows that people are loosing out under AWAs and WorkChoices, now John Howard and Peter Costello are dangling tax cuts in front of workers and their families hoping that we will forget the last five interest rate rises, the increased cost of petrol and groceries and the unfair industrial relations laws." "Every little bit helps but $34 billion would be better spent on services to fix our health system, to implement a national dental scheme, to fix our roads and provide a better education system." "These tax cuts may even push up interest rates and increase the squeeze on workers and their families." "A tax cut isn't a plan for our future. The Liberals' tax cut doesn't fix our hospitals or schools." |
