Federal Government Campaigning with Disability Services Funds

13 October 2007

The Federal Government is using disability funding for its Members of Parliament to campaign at 5 star venues across Australia. Senator Patterson this week presented the government's propaganda on disability funding at the Marriott, at which she confirmed 'consultation' would continue during the Caretaker government period.

Senator Patterson, a Federal Liberal Party Senator for Victoria, was at The Marriott Melbourne this week, as part of a 1 month National Roadshow to sell the Federal Government's Disability Assistance Package.

The Roadshow is being held in 5 star facilities at 27 venues across the country, with lunch provided. Not one of the 27 Roadshow venues is at a facility where people with a disability are supported to live or work.

This is blatant electioneering propaganda to cover up the fact that Federal Government refuses to commit to funding existing or future services for people with a disability.

It is abhorrent and offensive for the Federal Government to use funding for people with a disability for electioneering. They are clearly so far removed from the community's concerns to have no conscience about spending money on events, while claiming they can't afford better services for 5000 young people living in nursing homes

The Roadshow is targeted to carers of people on a disability pension, who will receive pension bonuses in lieu of services. The first pre-election bonus of $1000 will be paid this month to parents of disabled children under 16.

This revenue is in lieu of funding additional services for people with a disability delivered under the 'Commonwealth State and Territories Disability Agreement' (CSTDA) which expired on 30 June 2007.

State and Territory Ministers offered of a joint investment in disability services of $3.4 billion under the CSTDA. The Federal Government has refused to match this funding or enter negotiations with the States prior to the election.

The Roadshow confirmed that additional campaigning will be occurring by:

  • Continuing consultation during 'caretaker government' period.
  • Centrelink calling every recipient of a disability or carers pension to tell them they can be assessed for additional services. They are not advised that their 'eligibility' will not necessarily be translated to actual services under the capped funding.
  • Spending 1.5 million dollars consulting on removing barriers to private sector delivery of disability support services.
