ALP Health Plan a Breakthrough for Staff and Families

24 August 2007

The Health Services Union has today described the ALP’s new health plan as a breakthrough which would benefit people working in the health system and working families.

HSU national president Michael Williamson said health workers across the country would welcome a commitment to inject an extra $2 billion and reform Australia's dysfunctional healthcare system.

The union's national executive today in Melbourne passed a resolution supporting the injection of funding.

"For too long we have tried to make do with a system with too much cost-shifting and blame-shifting between the states and the federal government," he said.

"The Health Minister Tony Abbott in particular has been all talk no action.

"This is the approach we need where a Federal Government is prepared to inject the funds that are urgently needed to meet rapid increases in demand for hospital and aged care services and to tackle the inefficiencies and gaps in the system.

"Issues that also need to be addressed are workforce shortages, particularly among health professionals, the impact on acute care services of shortages of GPs and a lack of aged care beds.

"What we don't need is piecemeal solutions like the one proposed for the Mersey Hospital in Tasmania by the Federal Government.

"We need a solution that will benefit all Australians.

"The HSU endorses an approach that is based on setting new targets with the states which will ensure higher levels of care and greater resources for staff."
