Day of action against Work Choices01 December 2006Rallies protesting against the Work Choices laws were held at more than three hundred venues across Australia yesterday. The ACTU-organised National Day of Action saw rallies taking place in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Launceston, Adelaide, Darwin and in regional centres across Australia, almost a year to-the-day since the contentious legislations' introduction to Parliament. The all-important attendance figures for the major rally centres were healthy. Union estimates put the number at more than 264,000 not including Perth with Melbourne protester numbers estimated to have been approx 50,000. Commenting on the turn-out, ACTU Secretary Greg Combet said that workers fear of retribution by their employers for attending the rallies plus the threat of penalties for unauthorized work stoppages, combined to make the lower-than-expected numbers. Kicking the campaign into it's next stage, encouraging people to vote on workplace rights issues to oust the Liberal goverment, the ACTU and the Unions were given support by celebrities like Dave Huges, Corrine Grant and Jimmy Barnes. |
