HSU welcomes aged care overhaul with caution

27 July 2006

The Health Services Union today welcomed the Howard Government’s plan to implement whistleblower protection for aged care workers and resident’s families who speak out against elderly abuse.

Mr Craig Thomson, National Secretary of the HSU said today that he praises the government for overhauling the current complaints system but was reserving judgment until more detail was given on how the changes would work.

While a clear majority of people involved in caring for the elderly did the right thing - effective whistleblower protection would help workers to come forward and report abuse.

"When workers who see abuse and other problems are scared of losing their jobs, and are faced with workplace bullying - there is clearly radical improvements needed to the complaints system." Mr Thomson said.

It is really important that any new reforms provide strong support and protection for those who come forward to report abuse.

"This is a positive step forward, but there is still a long way to go to ensure that aged care workers and residents are given all the respect and dignity they deserve." Mr Thomson said.

Without a tough and empowered regulator - these changes will just not be enforced - and unfortunately abuse will continue unreported. The Union will pressure the government to ensure that these changes are both implemented and enforced.
