Action needed on Bird Flu

06 October 2005

The HSU has called on the Federal Government to make sure health workers are fully protected against any outbreak of the deadly bird flu.

HSU national secretary Craig Thomson said he had written to Health Minister Tony Abbott calling for the highest priority to be given to protecting health workers.

"We need to make sure that if a vaccine becomes available in the next few months that all health workers receive it as a matter of priority," he said.

"With a vaccine in trial form there also needs to be adequate supplies of the anti-viral drugs for health workers in the event of an outbreak.

"Members working in the health industry will be at the frontline if there is any outbreak of bird flue which affects humans in Australia."

The United Nations has already warned that 150 million people worldwide could be killed if there is a pandemic of a strain of bird flu which affects humans.
