Aged Care Phone-In08 July 2004The Health Services Union will hold a phone-in on Saturday July 17 in NSW and Western Australia to allow HSU members and members of the public to raise issues about the state of aged care. HSU staff and delegates will take calls on all aspect of aged care including staffing levels, care standards, safety and security, wages, accreditation and waiting times for beds. Information collected during the day will be followed up by officials of the HSU. It will also be used to assist the union in preparing its submission to a Senate inquiry into aged care which will examine the state of services in the industry. HSU NSW branch secretary Michael Williamson encouraged members and people with concerns about aged care to participate in the phone-in. "This Senate Inquiry provides us with a great opportunity to highlight many of the issues and concerns that our members have about how aged care operates," he said. "Members can tell us their concerns about wages, staffing levels, staff turnover, resident care, safety and security issues...anything that they feel may be relevant to the Senate Inquiry." The HSU WA branch secretary Dan Hill urged members, staff, residents and their families to call the hotline if they had concerns about aged care. "There is no more important issue than the quality of care being delivered to elderly Australians and we see this as an opportunity for people to have their say," he said. "We will use this information to help make sure aged care services are improved for residents and staff either through the Senate inquiry or directly by the union."
