$10 Not Enough For Award Workers

19 February 2004

Low-paid award workers across the country should only get a $10 wage rise according to the federal government and employers.

The offer, which was dismissed by the HSU as "stingy" was made in submissions to the national minimum wage case yesterday.

That case, heard in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission, every year determines how much extra 1.6 million workers who are covered by awards receive as a pay rise.

Some HSU members working in aged care, disability services and Aboriginal health workers are among those who rely on the wage case for a pay rise.

The union movement is calling for an increase of $26.60.

HSU national secretary Craig Thomson said an increase of $10 would be reduced to $7 after tax.

"It is a tiny amount for low paid workers who are struggling to pay bills and support their families," he said.
