Concern over Ambulance Resources in NSW

10 November 2003

The provision of emergency care in NSW is being undermined by problems with the state's ambulance fleet, the HSU said today.

The NSW branch secretary Michael Williamson said he was appalled at the level of problems within the service and questioned whether resources allocated were being properly used.

"On multiple occasions ambulance officers have failed to respond to emergencies due to the unavailability of their primary resource, ambulances," he said.

"Just recently in North Sydney an incident arose whereby officers in the ambulance station closest to the site of the casualty were unable to respond due to off-line ambulances.

"At evidence provided by this Union to the NSW Public Accounts Committee of the NSW Parliament, I indicated that resources were not sufficient or managed in a way to maximise benefits to the community.

"Admissions made by the Ambulance Service CEO later on that same day unfortunately were that response times in the last twelve months have not achieved the improvements sought and expected, despite the injection of additional resources."
