Day of Action Begins
22 October 2003
HSU members across Australia will take part in meetings and rallies today as part of the Medicare Day of Action.
The day of action will involve protest rallies and meetings attended by health professionals, ambulance officers and hospital staff in NSW, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania.
A rally will be held outside the office of Health Minister Tony Abbott in Manly in Sydney with healthworkers planning to present large Medicare-card petitions with thousands of signatures to the minister. Opposition Health Spokeswoman Julia Gillard will address the rally.
HSU National Secretary Craig Thomson said people who worked in healthcare were angry the Federal Government was deliberately downgrading Medicare by letting bulk-billing rates fall and forcing thousands of people who could not afford to see a doctor into hospitals.
