Statewide Industrial Action Planned in Victoria

The Health Services Union is preparing for a statewide industrial campaign in Victoria over moves to reduce jobs and hours of work within the hospital sector.

After a hearing in the AIRC today, the union said Southern Health was cutting jobs and hours of work because the government insists that it give back 1.5 per cent of the hospital's budget as part of the Treasury policy on productivity savings.

Mr Jackson said: "Today our branch committee of management has endorsed a statewide campaign in opposition to any job cuts or reductions in hours.

"This action is just the tip of the iceberg. We have an agreement with the government on job growth - on improving our hospitals only to find that in reality the government intends to reduce the money available for fixing issues in our public hospitals.''

Mr Jackson said that meetings at all workplaces are now commencing for the purpose of endorsing an industrial campaign which will affect every public hospital in Victoria.

Mr Jackson said that his union will fight and defend workers in hospitals until this is won.

The Health Services Union is the healthworkers union in Australia covering employees who work in all areas of the health including hospital, aged care, mental health, disability and community care.
