Government promises extra $40 million for waiting lists14 February 2005A re-elected Gallop government would spend $40 million on reducing waiting lists. Premier Geoff Gallop said that since 2001, waiting lists for public hospitals have been cut by almost 6,000 patients since a record high under the previous Coalition government. A re-elected Labor Government will increase funding by $40 million over the next four years to treat an additional 8200 people. The extra $40 million will ensure that those 8,200 patients, many of them elderly who have been waiting for many months, can have their operations sooner rather than later. The $40 million will specifically target category 2 and 3 patients who are not receiving their elective surgery within the clinically desirable times and particularly those requiring hip, knee and shoulder surgery.
