Labor's Plan for Carers and People with a Disability
01 October 2004
A Federal Labor Government will improve services, payments and opportunities for people with a disability and for carers, the millions of Australians who work tirelessly every day to support older Australians and people with a disability.
A Federal Labor Government will:
- Provide an extra $186 million which would enable around 15,000 more carers access to respite each year by 2007 and $30 million for capital improvements for respite services and accommodation.
- Improve income support with quarterly indexation of payments such as the Carer Payment and Disability Support Pension.
- Provide better employment opportunities for carers and people with a disability.
- Give carer and disability issues the prominence in Government they deserve.
- Appoint a permanent, full time Disability Discrimination Commissioner to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC). This is vital to protecting the rights of people with disability and to developing and implementing disability standards.
Services and accommodation for people with a disability remain chronically under funded and this has meant many young people with a disability are forced to live in nursing homes.
